A tribesman is always in exactly one of 31 work states. The game exposes assignments but never the state list, which is why “my tribesmen stopped working” is so hard to diagnose — several of these states look identical from the outside.

Three states that look like a bug and are not
- Dormant (
XiuMian) — the owning player has been offline too long, so their tribesmen stop working. The threshold is a server setting: days offline before tribesmen go dormant, which defaults to 7 (30 in Creative mode). - Too dejected to work (
XinQingJuSang) — mood has fallen far enough to stop work. Mood rise and fall are server settings: mood growth and mood decay. - Auto-managed (
TuoGuan) — the tribesman is under automatic management and will not take a manual assignment.
The caps that decide how many you can have
- Tribe tribesman cap — The tribe-wide ceiling on recruited tribesmen. This is the setting behind 'how do I raise the tribe limit'.
- Extra tribesmen: Connection Enhancement I — Additional recruitable tribesmen granted by Connection Enhancement level 1.
- Extra tribesmen: Connection Enhancement II — Additional recruitable tribesmen granted by Connection Enhancement level 2.
- Extra tribesmen: Connection Enhancement III — Additional recruitable tribesmen granted by Connection Enhancement level 3.
- Tribe member cap — Maximum number of players in a tribe.
- Fielded barbarian count — How many barbarian tribesmen may be fielded in combat.
- Barbarian taming speed — How fast a captured barbarian's taming meter fills. Higher = recruit tribesmen sooner.
- Wild barbarian quality — Multiplier on the quality roll of wild barbarians. Higher quality means better recruits.
